Along the way while riding the stern wheeler, we enjoyed an interpretive center based on the way Alaskan First Nations tribes lived in the harsh climates involved with being this far north. We were able to see demonstrations of how housing was designed, tools were made and used, food was processed, clothing was acquired and fashioned, and transportation was constructed. There were narratives on First Nation innovations as well as what changes affected them after the arrival of white men. This center is run and presented by First Nation Members and was a real treat. The young folks involved at the center attend universities throughout the lower 48 states in the winter and return to learn native customs and work toward spreading the word of their culture. Pretty informative. Here is a canoe crafted from birch bark.
