7/23/05. At about 2/3s the way up the pass, we came upon Independence Mine State Historical Park. This was one interesting place. I could've spent the day just walking around this old hard rock gold mine exploring all the buildings and mining contraptions. The park has really nice parking and picnicing facilities and you can even camp overnight (dry camp, $10/night) in the main parking in front of the visitor center.
