Seeing Our Country

8/01/05. After Columbia Glacier we headed for the Meares Glacier. The Meares, on first glance looks higher and "bigger" than Columbia, but this turns out to be an optical illusion of sorts. Most of the base of the Columbia's base is under water, whereas the Meares rests on a moraine which keeps the glacier above the the tide line. A result is that calving (when it happens) is more spectacular. Unfortunately, we were not able to observe this display of natural forces. We did get to see many smaller pieces break off and hit the water. The associated sound pops came across like cannon fire. Pretty neat stuff.
